Mixing patterns, textures. materials and colors in a room is an awesome way to add personality and interest to a space. After all, if two’s company, then three is definitely a party when it comes to mixing it up. Here’s a roundup of rooms we’ve designed that blend different design elements to create a perfect storm of gorgeous. Enjoy!

For this urban loft apartment, we took advantage of the industrial vibe of this space with its rough, concrete walls and juxtaposed them with warm woods, supple leathers and stone accents. I love the addition of the high gloss white desk behind the sofa, too. And best part is, it opens up to become a dining table that serves eight! This living room area is a great example of disparate materials working together to create a unified whole.

This family room redo is a master class in combining textures to create interest. Here we’ve paired a leather sofa with velvet chairs, added a multi-functional mix of two metal tables and a trio of ottomans (one with a wonderful nubby fabric), a fantastic new stone fireplace surround and hearth and a fabulous driftwood art piece on the bookshelf! Boom!

We knew we wanted color to be the focal point in our client’s sunroom, and they love red, so we wrapped this space head to toe in “Peppery,” a bright orangey red by Sherwin Williams. The pattern on the rug, valances and chair pillows softens the color, while adding interest and complementing the color of the existing tile floor. The brown leather chair helps ground the space, and a tall faux tree adds an organic element to the space.

This hearth room just feels right, doesn’t it? That’s because all the design elements are working so well together. The neutral space gets a pop of color in the oversized art and gold velvet throw pillow, while a quirky chair fabric adds pattern and whimsy. The deep navy leather ottoman and tall pedestal in navy shagreen add more depth to the space and another jolt of color, as does the dark blue area rug which anchors the room. And, of course, how great is that commanding stone fireplace?!

This boho chic townhouse is a favorite project because it’s my own home! It was important to me to have a comfortable place to wind down at the end of a busy day, and this theatre space really does that for me. Full of color, pattern and yes, texture, this space offers seating for six on a comfy, sink-in-soft velvet sofa in a deep, emerald green. An assortment of pillows in a variety of patterns and colors pop on this fabulous background. But it’s the stunning Art Deco rug that takes center stage here, and thanks to five small, multi-function cocktail tables and an ottoman, instead of the typical large coffee table, the rug’s beautiful and colorful design can shine.

The dining room is another favorite space in my townhouse. This is industrial meets boho meets just all around fantastic. A collection of disparate chairs in a variety of woods, patterns and fabrics surrounds an industrial-style dining table. The large display cabinet and lighting fixture add more industrial chic to the space, while a striking accent wall in Sherwin-Williams’ “Urbane Bronze,” makes my artwork pop.

Here are two completely different bedrooms; one rustic and earthy; one glamorous and contemporary, but both rich with texture, pattern and color.

(photo left): This bedroom is actually the primary bedroom in my own townhouse. While not a huge fan of exposed brick walls, I couldn’t change it since my home is a rental. So, I made the most of the awesome texture that brick provides. I chose neutral bed linens that don’t fight with the “busyness” of the brick and throw pillows that complemented the varying shades in the brick itself.  Autumn hues, metals, woods and a textured wall covering give an artisanal vibe to the space.

(photo right): The bedroom in the second photo uses the same family of blues but in different patterns. The diamond shape on the lamp is repeated in the sham fabric. And the opposing textures, including velvet, silk, nubby tweed on the headboard, wood, sleek chrome, fabric and wallpaper combine to create a harmonious and restful space.

This traditional sunroom is wrapped in a soft, neutral taupe and layered with different materials and textures to create interest — from the slate floor to the stacked stone fireplace to the beadboard ceiling accented with beams. The wrought iron sofa and chairs provide a nice contrast to the neutral palette on the walls and the geometric patterns on the fabrics and rug.
