Yesterday was International Women’s Day. This year is starting out as a very dynamic time for all women. In politics, in Hollywood and across the globe, the spotlight has been turned on women’s lives, creating conversations and implementing changes long overdue. I applaud all of these brave women who have told their stories and the many men and women who tirelessly work towards equality.
One woman who has caught the attention of the world is Megan Markle, actress, women’s advocate and soon-to-be British royalty. To me, Megan is a perfect example of our changing world. Think of it… An American soon to be British royalty. A “commoner” soon to be British royalty. A biracial person soon to be British royalty. A woman who already has a voice on the international stage for women’s rights will soon have an even bigger platform for her voice. At the least, she inspires little girls who dream of being princesses to know that being a princess is far more than just catching a prince. (Yes, I realize she technically won’t be a princess, but you catch my drift). Being a princess carries a responsibility to the world stage and Megan is the right person for the position.
Becoming British royalty is not the end game, but the starting line. This is about being a role model, changing attitudes and empowering women to speak up, be heard and live their dreams. The spotlight put on royalty is the vehicle that sends her voice around the world. Empowering women is not about making women superior. It is about giving voices to more than half the world population so that all of us, men and women alike, can have better futures.
Here is a link to a speech Megan gave to UNWomen in 2015. It could have been given yesterday and would be no less relevant.
All the best, Marcia
