Our Best, “You Won’t Believe Your Eyes” Before & Afters

Who doesn’t love a great Before and After? HGTV has made millions on the “Big Reveal,” where anxious homeowners are completely bowled over by the amazing transformations that the designer made in their homes. Turning a dated, dreary, dysfunctional space into one that wows and works is no easy task…even though HGTV might make you believe that is. It takes time and a whole lot of creativity to turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse, as they say.

In this post, I’d like to share some of our most dramatic, crazy good Before and Afters. With each of the projects, we were lucky to have clients that recognized what good design could be and trusted us to make magic happen in their homes. And yes, you won’t believe your eyes.

A GEOMETRIC REDO

An awkward layout and unsuitable window placement were the challenges in this master bath remodel. By significantly rearranging work areas, adding a wall for a separate water closet, incorporating classic finishes and using hexagon shapes throughout the space, we created a functional and beautiful master bath for our clients.

CAVERNOUS TO COZY

Finding the “cozy” in large open spaces was an underlying goal in this whole house suburban remodel. We used soft shades of gray to form a serene backdrop then added exclamation points throughout with pops of gold, blue and black. In the great room, awkward oversized niches became focal points when painted gold and filled with personal treasures and objets d’art.

DATED TO DELIGHTFUL

From cramped and dated to spacious and up-to-date, this was a project from 10 years ago, and it still feels current. That’s the beauty of great design. It stays in style for many years.

FAUX-ABULOUS!

Faux painting on the bottom of this unique mirror recreates its metal “fringe” and roping giving the mirror a bigger presence at the end of the narrow hallway.

FROM PINK TO PERFECT

Goodbye pink tile and 1980s vibe. Hello, sleek, modern and contemporary guest bath. We extended the bathroom by incorporating a hallway closet into the footprint of the room, which created more space for the vanity and a spacious shower.

LIVIN’ LARGE

Small but mighty, this contemporary kitchen remodel, resulted in a high-end, striking transformation. Open to the living room on one side and the dining room on the other, we decided that a minimalist aesthetic would keep the kitchen looking as large as possible and blend well with colors from the adjoining rooms. Light cabinetry and floors, quartz counters and backsplash, contemporary stainless hardware and fixtures, and unobtrusive, yet distinctive bar stools help this smaller kitchen live large.

SERENE AND SOPHISTICATED

Originally built as a separate self-contained sink area with a second door leading into a full bathroom, this room had lots of wasted space. By removing the wall, we created a spacious contemporary bath with a minimalist, spa-like feel using sleek, light wood cabinetry and contemporary lighting. A custom glass mosaic tile backsplash installed vertically to resemble a city skyline is a creative custom feature. Notice the enormous moon (mirror) over the skyline. From crowded to expansive, dated to delightful, this bathroom remodel is one of our favorites.

TIME FOR DINNER

It’s hard to believe this is even the same space. Designer Karen Dubinsky replaced the tired wall-to-wall carpeting with a sleek stone floor and opted for a contemporary table and chairs with a stunning Jonathan Adler chandelier to totally transform this dining room.

ANYTHING’S POSSIBLE!

This amazing kitchen remodel proves that nothing is too great a challenge! Designer Karen Dubinsky gave this sad space a happy redo with gorgeous wood cabinetry, a stunning gray geometric wall tile treatment, sleek stainless steel appliances and range hood and contemporary brass fixtures and hardware.

PLAIN JANE TO GLAMOUR GIRL

A complete gut rehab of this 1600-square-foot condo resulted in a glamorous and contemporary home that truly reflected the homeowners’ glamorous style. We changed the height and style of the window and added a trio of striking gold chandeliers and interesting accessories. Large vinyl tile sheets that mimic concrete replaced wall-to-wall carpeting and offer warmth to a slab floor that porcelain would not. Easy on the knees. Toasty on the toes. And what about that stunning white floor-to-ceiling tile on the fireplace wall!

SOMETIMES IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH.

Challenged by our clients to add personality and drama to their suburban home, we transformed typical spaces into delightful spaces with a “wow” factor. Saturated jewel tones in the hearth room add a rich warmth to this gathering space. It’s important to note that all we did in this space was paint the walls and change out the fireplace surround. Proof that sometimes a complete overhaul isn’t necessary to make a dramatic improvement and make furnishings look brand new!

HOT! HOT! HOT!

A single massive piece of Volcano Suede granite replaces the tired paneling and tile and turns this fireplace into a standing work of art. The dramatic lines of the natural stone and dark stain on the original paneling creates the moody and masculine vibe that our clients wanted.

SMALL BUT MIGHTY

By removing a half wall that existed between the eat-in kitchen and formal dining room, we were able to create a spacious cooking and eating area that works well for both intimate breakfasts and dinner parties. Beautifully grained light wood cabinets are anchored by a dark hardwood floor, and a new pantry cabinet retrofitted so the top half is open from the side, allowed us to add a coffee bar close to the table. Another tight space solution is a free-standing island that adds a chopping board and wine storage.

GATSBY WOULD APPROVE.

In keeping with the age and style of the home, our clients wanted to create a swanky, sophisticated, moody space reminiscent of the 1920s style of décor. Designer Karen Dubinsky rethought the entire room, removing walls and transforming what was once an enclosed four-walled space into an open, spacious U-shaped kitchen. An island, topped in soapstone with beautiful white and pink veining, added valuable storage. The heavy brass shelving is elegantly balanced by graceful cut crystal light bulb pendants and small scale white herringbone is a stunning backsplash.
