I am so in love with dark, moody colors right now. One of my favorites is aubergine, the deep purplish red that is the harbinger of cozy winter nights, warm blankets by the fire and rich mulled wine. And is the world ever more beautiful than when green leaves are transformed into purple fantasies and blanket the ground with their beauty? Aubergine is also the color of so many delicious foods, such as eggplant, raisins and plums. Even the word “aubergine” evokes fantasies of royal proportions, signifying sophistication, wealth and power.
How to Design with Aubergine
Using aubergine in your home is a no holds barred, full-on commitment, but it can also be done in small doses if you just want to dip your toe into the purple waters. It is a confident color, passionate and strong. Aubergine is ideal for creating a presence or a imparting a sense of importance or drama to a space. Luscious paired with citron or mustard yellow, deep forest green or even bright pink, aubergine can take your interior (and exterior) spaces to a whole new level of loveliness.
Grey and aubergine is a timeless combination.
Bright colors paired with aubergine are always winning combos. Mustard yellow makes deep aubergine walls come alive, and red with aubergine is a spirited duo.

Aubergine is a beautiful and unexpected alternative to more traditional exterior door colors, such as black or navy, and looks especially great here with the taupe window mullions. Aubergine even works on siding!
And finally, when it’s time to entertain, nothing could be more stunning than a gold bar cart laden with soft pink china against a glossy aubergine paneled wall. And what about this dining room with the silver leaf ceiling and “sink-in-soft” aubergine upholstered dining chairs? Wow!
