Hallways are an often overlooked space in a home; especially if the home is on the smaller side. Merely a way to get from room to room, hallways frequently get the short end of the design stick. And that’s so unfortunate, because the hallway is the perfect spot to make a statement! To me, hallways fall into the same category as powder rooms and dining rooms. They are the ideal space for going all out with your design. Get wild, be unique, take a dare, get creative and think outside the box.
Today I’ve assembled a lot of great hallways to inspire you and get your creative juices flowing. Some are functional, some are over the top, some are simply sensational but they ALL have style!
And not too worry! If you’d like to give your hallway a marvelous makeover but don’t feel like you have a creative bone in your body, call us. We can help.
Wow with Wallpaper
Wallpaper is an unexpected and fun touch in a hallway. Afraid to add too much color? Try a black and white pattern. Be daring with a paper like the Pioro Fornasetti’s “Tema e Variazioni “faces” or try a bold modern floral like this one that helps to add a dash of panache to a simple Scandinavian interior. The designer continued the black and white theme in the room at the end of the hallway.
Another minimalistic hallway gets dressed to the nines with an organic black and white paper, while a graphic map mural adds interest to this plain Jane hallway.
Of course, if you love color, like I do, choosing a bright, vivid paint color or patterned wallpaper or mural can really wake up the walls of a hallway! Create the feeling of being outdoors with a fabulous mural like Miles Redd did in this fantastic hallway. Have a divided hallway? Experiment with a couple of different but complementary hues by trying out a color block look. Or give your hallway a high octane punch of color! I love this vibrant yellow with all the black and white art in designer Luke Edward Hall’s London apartment. And of course orange lacquer, a hopscotch board and a Charlie Brown tree is…well…perfection.
Dark and Moody
Looking to add some drama to your hallway? Paint it black, or a dark blue (maybe even lacquer it like this one for extra dramatic effect). Besides adding drama, dark walls can make the hallway recede into the rooms surrounding it. Let’s face it. Dark walls can even be a little bit sexy 😉
Light and Bright
On the other hand, light, bright hallways are open, fresh and inviting. Adding a sheen to white walls helps light bounce off them, too, so the hallway can appear wider. Architectural elements such as arches and panel molding can also give the illusion of more space, adds interest to an all white hallway and can give it a polished feeling. Not feeling all white? Add an accent wall for a pop of color or paint your doors black. Black and white is always a classic combo for a hallway or any room.

Think Overhead and Underfoot
Don’t underestimate the power of a fabulous floor or chic chandelier or lighting fixture to make a definitive style statement in a hallway.

Make Function Fabulous
Hallways are perfect spots for building in extra storage and adding mini libraries. If they are wide enough, hallways can function as a place to add extra seating or a console table. In this first photo, the hallway between the kitchen and dining room was so large, we were able to add a butler’s pantry. And in the second, a short hall between the family room and kitchen sports a live edge wall-mounted console.
