Decked Out: A Guide to the Best Outdoor Furnishings

“Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me, those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” — Henry James

I couldn’t agree more! I am definitely a summertime person. I love warm weather, being outside and soaking up the sun. So outdoor living spaces are some of my favorite to design. If you follow my blog, you’ve read about beautiful alfresco spots, such as porches, pool houses and accessory dwelling units (ADUs), including guest houses, carriage houses, granny flats, and even outbuildings that have been reimagined as something else, such as a garage turned art studio. In today’s blog I’m going to show you some head-turning outdoor furnishings and accessories.

When it comes to outfitting your outdoor world, there are certain things to remember. First, outdoor furniture should never be too precious. The furniture you choose for alfresco living should be comfortable and made to last. Nothing irks me more than trying to enjoy my poolside cocktail on a chair that says “okay, time to go.” That being said, there is no need to sacrifice beauty for comfort. And, furnishing an outdoor space should offer the opportunity to bring a fresh and unexpected perspective to your surroundings. Your backyard should look just as spectacular as your living room!

Okay, are you ready to see the unexpected and the innovative? Are you ready to see some twists on traditional outdoor furnishings that will make you sit up and take notice? Whether you like classic wrought iron or rustic wood, shiny aluminum or coastal teak, sleek contemporary or down home farmhouse, I hope you’ll find some inspiration in this roundup.

Swing Time

Who doesn’t love a hammock?  Nothing embodies a relaxed way of life better than lying on your back, swinging to and fro in the summer breeze. This classic and romantic way to rest and rejuvenate is centuries old. Columbus actually discovered the hammock in the Bahamas in 1492 where he stated that “people were sleeping in nets between the trees.” Here are several different styles of hammocks that I’m loving.

Not into hammocks? You can still get “moving” with a swinging daybed or chair!
